Restylane FAQs

Answers to your most frequent questions about Restylane treatments..

What is Restylane?
[top]

Restylane is the trade name of Hyaluronic Acid, a substance that plays an important role giving volume to the skin, shape to the eyes and elasticity to the joints. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in your skin and other tissues.

After many years of research, the company Q-Med in Uppsala, Sweden, succeeded in developing a way of using a Non-Animal, Stabilized, Hyaluronic Acid to replace the loss of volume in the skin. Before the launch of RESTYLANE in 1996, only collagen made from cow hide and hyaluronic acid made from rooster combs had been available.

How does Restylane work?
[top]

During treatment, the crystal-clear RESTYLANE gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. When enhancing lips or facial contours, RESTYLANE adds volume and shape to the treated area.

What can be treated with Restylane injections?
[top]

Anyone who has moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds can be treated with Restylane injections. It typically is injected into the mid-to-deep dermis sections of the skin. Results of your Restylane treatment will include:

  • You will notice an immediate smoothing of the wrinkles and folds.
  • Restylane will impart lift and add new firmness to your skin.
  • With lip enhancement, the results will be a noticeably fuller and more sensuous contour.

Who should NOT use Restylane treatments?
[top]

So far, no connection between patients with allergies and patients that report a reaction to RESTYLANE has been established. See: Are Restylane treatments safe?

What results should I expect from Restylane injections?
[top]

Immediately after the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist for a few days (up to a week). If the discomfort continues, please contact your physician.

During the first 48 hours after your treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. If you have had a lip enhancement, avoid puckering your lips for the first two days after the treatment. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a solarium or by sunbathing) or extreme cold.

How long does a Restylane treatment take?
[top]

Treatment with RESTYLANE is a very quick and easy process. As no pre-test is needed, the treatment can be carried out immediately. A treatment generally takes 30 minutes. The time differs somewhat, depending on the correction you wish to have performed.

Are Restylane treatments safe?
[top]

Yes. Restylane has been used safely by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996 worldwide. Because Restylane is non-animal-based and fully biocompatible, allergy testing is not required. The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days. Refer to Side Effects.

Are Restylane injections painful?
[top]

Most people find the injections relatively painless. They may prick a little. If you like, a topical anaesthetic can be applied to the area being treated prior to your procedure. When enhancing the lips, alocal anaesthetic injection is often given.

How soon are the results of Restylane injections noticeable?
[top]

The results of Restylane injections can be seen immediately.

How long does the effect of a RESTYLANE treatment last?
[top]

Treatments last much longer than the traditional collagen filler. The lasting effects of treatment are dependent on your age, skin structure and lifestyle. Treatments may last six months to one year. Initially a second treatment may be required after two to four weeks to achieve the results you desire.

Experience indicates that touch-up and follow-up treatments will add to the duration. Most people choose to have a new treatment within a year after the treatment of wrinkles and folds and within 6 months after a lip enhancement.

How often can I get Restylane treatments?
[top]

Restylane may be done as needed because of its natural qualities.

Are there side effects from Restylane?
[top]

The rate of reactions to RESTYLANE is very low. However, after the treatment some common injection-related reactions may occur, such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the injection site. These typically resolve spontaneously within a few days after injection into the skin and within a week after the injection into the lips. Other types of reactions are very rare, but about 1 in 2000 treated patients have experienced localized reactions thought to be of a hypersensitive nature. These have usually consisted of swelling at the injection site, sometimes affecting the surrounding tissues. Redness, tenderness and rarely acne-like formations have also been reported. These reactions have either started a few days after the injection or after a delay of two to four weeks, and have generally been described as mild to moderate and self-limiting with an average duration of two weeks. This text does not contain all the information known about these products. For more information please consult your practitioner.

The cause of lip swelling is not yet known, but there is no reason to believe that this is an immunological reaction. Normally, the swelling is gone within a week after injection into the lips.

Can RESTYLANE replace surgical procedures?
[top]

No. However, RESTYLANE is sometimes used in conjunction with surgery to fill out wrinkles that cannot be removed by surgery.

Can RESTYLANE be used if I have undergone laser treatment or chemical peeling?
[top]

If you have recently had some other kind of facial treatment, you are recommended to wait until the treated area is totally healed and the skin has normalized (usually four to six weeks) before you undergo a RESTYLANE treatment.

Restylane® Versus BOTOX®.. Which is right for me?
[top]

Both products are equally good but their applications vary with the patient's condition, requirements, and circumstances under which the product has been used.

Although both of these treatments are effective and FDA approved, Restylane, as a natural substance does not require pre-testing for allergic reactions. Soothing effects of restylane can last up to one year whereas Botox effects last for 3 to 6 months. Although Botox treatment causes minimal pain it may cause a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. It also cannot improve wrinkles of sun-damaged skin. Botox cannot be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or used on neurology patients.
