What is Juvéderm?
[top]
Juvéderm™ is a non-animal based injectable filler made in the laboratory. It is made of hyaluronic acid - a material that is in the joints and bodies of all living things. Hyaluronic acid is also the main ingredient of Restylane. It is a complex sugar that maintains its three dimensional shape in the body by attracting and holding large numbers of water molecules.
Among its many natural functions, hyaluronic acid maintains the volume of the skin, keeps skin hydrated and maintains the shape of the eye. As we age, we lose hyaluronic acid from the skin and it loses its volume and structure. Injecting Juvéderm™ into skin folds and wrinkles replaces that structure and volume.
How does Juvéderm work?
[top]
The ability of cells to produce hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, resulting in the formation of wrinkles and folds as the skin loses volume. Juvéderm™ gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts to replace lost volume, lifting up and smoothing out unwanted wrinkles.
Who should use Juvéderm treatments?
[top]
If you are experiencing wrinkles or expression lines on the face, forehead or around the eyes, Juvéderm™ will help these symptoms to gradually fade giving you a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Juvéderm™ significantly repairs deep lines and wrinkles (visible signs of stress and aging) due to squinting, laughing , frowning, smoking, and anxiety.
Who should NOT use Juvéderm treatments?
[top]
Juvéderm™ contain trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins and should not be use by patients with a history of allergies to such material. After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than seven days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappears. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use Juvéderm™.
Who should administer Juvéderm Treatments?
[top]
Any authorized healthcare professional can administer Juvéderm™ injectable gel, but dermatologists, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors), or physicians specializing in cosmetic procedures are generally more experienced.
What does Juvéderm treat?
[top]
By injecting Juvéderm into the mid to deep dermis (below the outer layer of skin), the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the creases running from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth), can be dramatically improved.
Juvéderm™ smoothes and adds volume to facial tissue:
- Filling in nasolabial folds or "smile lines"
- Filling in creases between the eyes (the glabella area)
- Filling in "marionette" lines at the corners of the mouth
- Eliminating under eye dark circles ("Non Surgical Eye Lift")
- Enhancing the lips
What results should I expect from Juvéderm injections?
[top]
Juvéderm™' injectable gel will help to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last about 6 months.
Correction is temporary; therefore, touch-up injections as well as repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal corrections.
How long does a Juvéderm treatment take?
[top]
No anesthesia is required for your Juvéderm treatment, although your doctor may numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The injection site will be determined by examining the appearance of the skin throughout your face and neck area. Your doctor will use an ultra fine needle to inject Juvéderm into those areas of your face and neck that appear sunken or hollow. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes and there is minimal discomfort during or after the procedure. Most patients compare the injection to the feeling of a pinprick.
Are Juvéderm treatments safe?
[top]
Juvéderm™ was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2006 for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, folds, and lines. Because Juvéderm™ is a fully biodegradable and biocompatible gel based on a natural substance, there is little or no risk of allergic reactions that can sometimes occur as a result of treatments that utilize animal-derived fillers. No pre-testing is required and as Juvéderm™ breaks down it is easily absorbed by the body. Side Effects.
Are Juvéderm injections painful?
[top]
Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the injection. The smooth consistency gel of Juvéderm™ allows your doctor to administer it easily and smoothly. And, Juvéderm™ is injected directly into the skin using a fine needle to reduce injection discomfort. Your doctor may choose to numb (anesthetize) the treatment area to further minimize discomfort.
How soon are the results of Juvéderm injections noticeable?
[top]
Results from Juvéderm™ are apparent almost immediately and typically last much longer than collagen.
How long are Juvéderm injections effective?
[top]
The unique formulation of Juvéderm™ provides results that last up to 6 months or longer.
How often can I get Juvéderm treatments?
[top]
Juvéderm™ treatments are repeated at 8-12 month intervals or sooner for touch up of the lip areas
Are there side effects from Juvéderm?
[top]
Juvéderm™ is a fully biodegradable and biocompatible gel based on a natural substance and because it is not derived from animal-based proteins or products, there is little or no risk of an allergic reaction. Some clients may experience tenderness, temporary redness, or minimal swelling at the injection areas. Any discomfort following treatment should disappear within 24 hours or within a few days.
Juvéderm Versus Restalyne®.. Which is right for me?
[top]
Both products are equally good but their applications vary with the patient's condition, requirements, and circumstances under which the product has been used.
Restylane® and Juvéderm™ have been used in more than 3 million treatments in over 60 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. In the United States, the FDA has approved Restylane® and Juvéderm™ for wrinkles and folds like the ones from the nose to the corners of the mouth.
