What is Botox®® and how does it work?

Botox®® Cosmetic is a purified protein, which reduces muscle activity that cause the frown lines between the brows to form as one ages. Over the last several years, physicians have used these muscle-relaxing characteristics of Botox®® Cosmetic to correct visible signs of stress and aging. Botox®® Cosmetic is also used to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the underarms, palms of hands, and soles of feet.

The contractions and movements of the facial muscles are controlled by signals from the brain. Botox® is injected in minute quantities into the contracted muscles that cause wrinkles. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form, while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. The skin's reaction to the muscles is what commonly causes wrinkles.

Are Botox® injections suitable for everyone?

If you take antibiotics regularly, Botox® treatments may not be for you as there is a higher risk for an adverse reaction to the product. Also, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to postpone this procedure at least until their infants are no longer dependant on them for nutrition. Also, Botox® cannot improve wrinkles of sun-damaged skin, or be used on neurology patients.

Botox® is also not be used when there are signs of infection at the proposed injection site(s) or in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.

The Botox® Treatment: How long does it take? Are Botox® injections painfull?

As mentioned above, a Botox® treatment generally takes about 10 minutes. It is not necessary to anesthetize the treatment area due the insignificant degree of discomfort associated with Botox® injections. The discomfort is comparable to being pricked by a pin.

Botox® is injected with a very thin needle into the area affected by visible lines. This Botox® injection causes the muscles initiating the lines and wrinkles to relax which reduces the appearance of undesirable wrinkles and lines on the skin. The skin's reaction to the muscles is what commonly causes wrinkles. The results of the Botox® treatment may be seen as soon as 3 days following treatment.
