The BLU-U^® Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator system by DUSA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. gained FDA approval in 2003 for the treatment of mild to moderate acne. It is a compact light source with u-shaped fluorescent tubes designed to uniformly distribute blue light onto the treatment area. BLU-U® blue light system can be used alone as an acne treatment, or with Levulan^® solution as part of blue light photodynamic acne therapy.

Patients receiving Blue Light Acne Treatment (without Levulan) simply sit in front of the BLUE Light delivery system for about sixteen minutes. Treatments are spaced at weekly intervals. The number of your treatments, your treatment time and your treatment interval may vary with the severity of your acne.

Blue Light with Levulan adds the topical application of Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) in conjunction with the blue light treatment. After Levulan is applied and absorbed into the skin it is converted into a potent photosensitizer, protophorphyrin IX. Because Levulan absorbs into actinic keratoses and sebaceous glands it selectively targets them. The blue light then activates these protophorphyrins, resulting in shrinkage of these tissues and the improvement in the acne condition.
